This month’s "Meet the Member" features Colombian illustrator, mural artist and scotch pancake eater Catalina Carvajal.
Tell us a little about yourself
I'm a Colombian illustrator and visual artist currently living in Ipswich. I'm adventurous and a bit of a hot-headed person that knows how to disguise it (or not?). Some say that I'm a bit inappropriate but I usually get away with it.
I'm fond of Scotch pancakes, porridge and tea in the mornings. I think I've finally adapted to the British diet and weather. It took me 4 years though. I'm in love with British rock music
When do you feel most creative?
While sleeping (yes!), after a good night's sleep, after reading or watching something inspirational and, I must confess, when under pressure. I'm a stress ball.
How did you find out about Unicorn Studios?
Online. A couple of years ago I didn't have many professional connections or friends around. I was looking for creative places to meet like-minded people and do some networking.
While working at home what is your guilty pleasure?
From time to time, eating a bowl of crisps, a mix of nuts and raisins and a can of Coke while watching videos of pranks on YouTube during my long breaks.
Have you had any embarrassing Zoom moments?
Arriving unprepared to a meeting I didn't know I was going to chair! Very embarrassing indeed. I fixed it with my charm though. I've managed to keep unusual "decorative objects" out of the way (private joke?).
What is your hidden talent?
I'm very, very, very good at sleeping and waiting for planes and trains. While living in Mexico, I learned how to have little semi-naps in the underground during long journeys - I never missed a stop.
If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?
Many things, but the main ones would be, the history of the world, economics and sewing. I'd make my own dresses to rule the world in style.
What’s one of your favourite memories from 2020?
Getting to attend the Illustrators' Meet-up at Unicorn Studios before lockdown started! It was a good taste of the fantastic workspace and the amazing individuals I would be surrounded by if I joined. Also getting involved in artistic community projects, such an eye opener.
What have you most looked forward to as the world starts to get back to ‘normal'?
To visit Mum, Dad and Bro in Colombia, I really miss them! A visit to Portugal is next on the list.
What would success look like for you in the future?
Be a relatively healthy and not so grumpy lady of a certain age that can depart this world without any emotional or financial debts.
Would you rather be a tiny unicorn or a giant hamster?
I'm already tiny but having a horn would be great! I could jab bigots' feet with it without their noticing.
